What are the proper ways to use a 3D foot scanner, and what precautions should be taken?

2026-07-03

3D foot scanners generally utilize laser principles to measure the foot, acquiring foot morphological data and 3D data models.

3D foot scanners are commonly applied in evaluating flat feet, high arches, foot varus, foot valgus, hallux valgus, etc. They can also be applied in offline stores for intelligent shoe size recommendation and quick selection of suitable insoles and shoe sizes. Additionally, they can be applied in fields such as the design and production of corrective insoles and corrective shoes.

Usage Methods of 3D Foot Scanner

1. Before scanning, connect the power supply, turn on the machine, and check whether the equipment can operate normally.

2. If the equipment is being used for the first time, zeroing and calibration of the equipment must be performed. After calibration, there is no need to calibrate again subsequently. Of course, if serious data problems occur, recalibration is required.

3. Before testing, the tester must remove shoes and socks and roll up trouser legs to about 10cm above the ankle to avoid obstructing the laser scanning. In addition, it is necessary to keep both feet clean and dry, without water stains or sweat.

4. Stand in the scanning area; both feet must stand within the designated footprint markings of the equipment. Meanwhile, keep both feet parallel, relax the body, and do not sway, so that the center of gravity does not deliberately lean to the left or right. Look straight ahead; do not look down at the feet, nor bend over; keep the body upright and relaxed.

5. Click the start button on the software, then quietly wait for the scanning. During this process, there will be voice prompts telling you how to operate; just follow the voice prompts.

6. After scanning is completed, you can check the integrity of the model, and you can also view measurement reports and data such as STL.

Precautions

1. The equipment should avoid direct sunlight or strong overhead light, because strong light will cause overexposure of the lens, resulting in distorted measurement data or loss of certain data.

2. Try to ensure there are no debris or obstacles in the scanning area.

3. During the measurement process, do not stand on tiptoes, do not shake the body, stand naturally, and look straight ahead, so that the measured data will be more objective.

4. It is best to measure twice to see if there are large data errors. If the error between the data of two measurements exceeds 1.5mm, it is necessary to rescan or check whether there is a problem with the equipment.

5. It is best to conduct measurements under the accompaniment of trained professionals, so as to avoid data distortion or even errors caused by improper operation.
